Reasonable
Arithmetic & Algebra (RAA) is a standalone
version of Part I of A2DC,
that is the prequel to Lagrange
Differential Calculus, meant to parallel the
more usual "developmental" courses. The main difference between RAA and Part I of A2DC is the
de-emphasis of arithmetic functions and approximations.
- Decimal-Metric Number-phrases
- Comparisons and Operations
- Equations/Inequations
- Polynomial Algebra
I believe, though, that this de-emphasis results in a contents
architecture that is weaker than that of Part I of A2DC and that the
latter could in fact also be used as a standalone
since there is no prerequisite either.
NOTE. While the contents of RAA might appear to
be much the same as those of RBA, in
addition to de-emphasizing arithmetic functions
and approximations, Part I - Introduction
to Arithmetic of RBA
develops the necessary ideas only in the context of counting
number-phrases and takes decimal number-phrases
for granted. The contents of both RAA
and RBA
were cut back compared to those of Part I of A2DC because they
had to fit the schedule of existing courses at my
school. It should be fairly easy to adapt them to more generous
schedules.
